Introduction

There are two kinds of trips offered by most photo excursion companies.

A photo "tour" is a trip in which the you pay for being guided to photo locations, but are not instructed or critiqued on your technique. In other words, you are paying for a tour guide.

A photo "workshop" involves learning new techniques to improve your photography. This can be in a classroom setting, but more often is a "field workshop", in which you go to various places familiar to the instructors to practice. You often attend seminars in the evening at a workshop, and/or have your film developed and critiqued on site. On this website, a lot of the "workshops" listed are field workshops to beautiful locations far from any classroom. In this respect, the workshops are almost like photo tours. However, the emphasis is still on learning, and your evenings will probably be spent learning.

Many proprietors offer both workshops and tours.

Photo Tour & Workshop Databases

In addition to the sites accessible from the menu, there are some general databases of photography tours, workshops and tours. We list these here.

Photosecrets Travel Photography. The Photo Guides information page links to a secure server allowing you to order travel guides from Photograph America and Photo Traveler. The "links" page has tons of information on travel/nature photography, photo workshops, stock agencies, photo tips, stores, manufacturers, magazines and clubs. Lists of workshops and tours can be found at photosecrets.com, phototravel.com and at photographamerica.com.

Apogee Photo workshops, tours & schools page has an extensive selection of each. Apogee Photo is an online magazine.

ShawGuides' Guide to Photography Workshops and Tours. A very extensive list. ShawGuides is a publisher of comprehensive worldwide guides to educational travel and creative career programs.
